Microblading with Proper Size Needle Taper & Diameter

by Ryan Fretwell 23 May 2019

Microblading clients have a range of needs and wants. Some do loads of research before they book an appointment, finding out everything they can about the procedure, tools, and potential outcomes. Others rely on the word and advice of friends who have had microblading done and come in on good faith alone.

For those that are curious, and for artists looking for a little extra info on the tools we use, we thought it would be fun and informative to talk about: Microblading with Proper Size Needle Taper & Diameter.

Even though it might not sound like the most thrilling topic, it is very important. The microblade needle taper and diameter drastically affects the outcome of the procedure, including detail achieved, how the pigment flows into the skin, and even the amount of time it will take to heal.

Microblades are comprised of a series of a thin, fine needles. When looking for the perfect microblade, the taper and diameter are the first things to consider. To start, here are the definitions.

Taper: The starting point where the needle begins to narrow toward the sharpened tip.

Diameter: The thickness of a single needle within a microblade.

Because of the delicate nature of microblading needles, they can be prone to bending or breaking if the taper size is not adequate or proportionate to the diameter of the needle. Most needle tapers range from 1mm to 4mm, which affects the sharpness of the needle. Of course, the sharper the needle, the easier it will penetrate the skin and the less trauma it will inflict on the skin.

Another thing to consider is that the longer the needle’s taper, the better flow of pigment into the skin and the finer the lines. This is especially important when creating the crisp lines of each individual brow. That’s not to say that short tapers are bad! They are extremely important, too, and are essential for softer lines like those needed to create a shading technique.

The diameter of the blades will range somewhere between 0.15mm to 0.28mm. The same concept applies here, with the smaller diameter used to create fine, crisp lines, and the thicker will be used to ink the thicker, softer lines needed to fill in.

The right balance between diameter and taper will ensure that both the tool and the client’s skin are left in the best possible shape. It is essential to consider the condition of the client’s skin, and to listen to exactly what they want the end result to look like. Not everyone wants a dramatic and bold look, plenty of people are after something more natural and softer looking.

In our opinion, it is never okay to cut corners on the quality of pigment or on the tools; microblades and microblading pens being used. We use the highest quality products on the market, and take the time to get to know our clients so they leave feeling the most beautiful they have ever felt. There’s no better feeling than giving your clients the exact right look that enhances their beauty and their self-confidence.
